Trae Young於亞特蘭大老鷹時代正式畫下句點，他也正式透過交易轉戰華盛頓巫師，展開職業生涯新篇章。而據記者Jake Fischer 報導指出，多倫多暴龍其實在過去一個賽季以及本賽季期間，都曾對Trae Young表達高度興趣。

Fischer進一步於報導中指出暴龍曾在去年交易截止日前向老鷹提出報價，內容包含Immanuel Quickley搭配選秀權作為主體，但最終遭到老鷹方面拒絕。

不過老鷹並不青睞以Immanuel Quickley為核心的交易方案，主因在於其未來合約金額將影響薪資彈性。相較之下老鷹更看重的是財務操作空間，這點也正是他們在此次交易中，選擇接手CJ McCollum與Corey Kispert的關鍵因素。
